I know some people will think I’m a bit wierd, but this is actually my favourite Beatles album. This is the one that I listen to the most – and I’ve got them all. The first side has got to be the strongest set of songs they ever did, pre-Rubber Soul.
No Reply and I’m A Loser are two cracking tunes that stick in your head until the end of time, and Rock And Roll Music is the best cover version they ever did. (although I think the live version on Anthology 1 is a little bit better.)
I will skip over Mr. Moonlight. The least said about that song the better. What were they thinking?

But then we’ve got 2 more classic tracks in Kansas City and Eight Days A Week. I defy anyone not to smile when they get to the call and response finale bit of Kansas City. It is absolute perfection.

Side 2, I admit, is not on the same level as the first side, but What You’re Doing is still one of McCartney’s best early tracks, and George blasts out Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby – his best cover-version.

If you’re just starting out With The Beatles then here is your first stop. Buy this and Rubber Soul and you’ll be a fan for life.

Their worst by far. This was coddled together to be ready for EMI to present it at a record fair, and as they were busy touring and making movies they had to resort to doing some dreadful cover versions (Mr. Moonlight! Really? ). Its hard to believe George Martin didn’t counsel them do better songs if they had to do covers at least do good ones.

I think it is a forgotten album, probably because it did not came together with a movie as the previous and the next one did. In my opinion some of the best Lennon- McCartney songs belong to this album. I’m m a loser, Eight Days A Week, No Reply, I’ll Follow The Sun, and my favourite: I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party. It is a shame that there are no songs written by Harrison here, but it also contains some of the best classic rock and roll covers that the Beatles ever performed. I will never forget when I discovered this one, the fist Beatles album I ever heard and touch with my hands. I was only 7 and I used to transform myself in Lennon with the help of a simple tennis racket.

As with the previous With The Beatles the album suffers from not having the accompanying single I Feel Fine/She’s A Woman on it.They should have also included John’s blistering cover Leave My Kitten Alone recorded at the sessions.(later released on the Anthology series) at the expense of the covers (Mr. Moonlight/Words Of Love/Honey Don’t)
While not being in the top echelon of Beatle Albums there still classic material here notably No Reply John’s Dylan influenced I’m A Loser as well as Eight Days A Week and Baby’s In Black
Most groups would give their right hand for songs that we’re seen as mere album material given the bands songwriting riches.
