5-star review  from  Dominic

This was unlike other Beatles EPs released at the time in the UK as all four songs we’re brand new. Other EPs released before and after, with the exception of the Magical Mystery Tour double set for XMAS 67, contained tracks lifted directly from a recent long player or rounded up hit singles as in the case of "Hits" and "Million Sellers"

Three classic rock & roll covers by Little Richard (title track), Larry Williams (Slow Down) and Carl Perkins (Matchbox) are joined by Lennon & McCartney original "I Call Your Name" which was also recorded by Liverpool and Brian Epstein stable mates Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas. Four great performances from the Boys which helped to keep them very much on the charts in the UK in the summer of 64 while everyone eagerly aWaited the release of "A Hard Day’s Night" single, LP and movie. Wonderful!

"Long Tall Sally" is, for me, the best of all the Beatles EPs. Pure Rock n Roll. Maccas vocals on the title track is one of the best in all of Rock. And these we’re all songs not on any UK album (though certainly put to good use on the US albums). Perhaps the only flaws we’re that George Harrison was not featured as a vocalist. The other three are. I’m sure the idea just hadnt occurred to them, but maybe leaving off "I Call Your Name" (the only Lennon/McCartney original on the EP) and having George cover another of their Germany/Cavern/BBC days standards would have made for a more thematic collection. I also always thought the choice of cover photos was kind of odd… not a very flattering shot of George or Paul.
Still, other than "Magical Mystery Tour", this is my only truly "5 star" EP.
