This is the worst single that the Beatles ever did. People like this but I dont know why, it's just a corny song with a cheesy chorus where they are piling on the harmonies just to show off. The riff is pretty solid and good. That is the only good thing about the song.

But the lyrics? Please. Anyone who likes these lyrics must be loony.

Paperback Writer rocks, and its lyrics are clever. Paul writes a story about an aspiring Paperback Writer who writes a story about an aspiring Paperback Writer. Its the literary equivalent of seeing ones image in a second mirrors reflection.

The unaccompanied contrapuntal vocals are beautiful. I heard this song on the radio in 1966 and it made me jump up and down.

This is my favorite Beatles single, and I’ve owned them all, US and UK. For 1966, "Paperback Writer" had such heavy sounding guitars. Classic Beatles harmonies, and typical tongue-in-cheek humor. "Rain" is perhaps, to me, a more quintessential Lennon song than even "Strawberry Fields Forever", though it is interesting that was the (Lennon-written) single after this one ("Yellow Submarine" and "Eleanor Rigby" we’re both penned by McCartney). Ringo’s drumming on "Rain" makes the song, and again - classic Beatles harmonies. And the backwards vocals at the end pointed the way to where their music was going on Revolver.

My runners up, and there’s a bunch, include "We Can Work It Out"/"Day Tripper", "I Feel Fine"/"She’s A Woman", "Hello, Goodbye"/"I Am The Walrus", "Help! "/"I’m Down", "Hey Jude"/"Revolution" and, of course, "Strawberry Fields Forever"/"Penny Lane" but this ("Paperback Writer"/"Rain") would be my desert-island Beatles single, hands-down.
