John was reportedly annoyed that ‘I Am The Walrus’ was relegated to the flip-side but unfortunately for his ego it proved to be their biggest-selling single since ‘She Loves You’, and started a run of four mega-selling Paul A-sides.

The single proved to be a little unlucky for The Beatles because when the Musician’s Union caught wind of the fact that they mimed the words in the promo, they prevented it being shown on telly. On the 6th February 1976 The Beatles contract with EMI expired, freeing up the company to do whatever they liked with their back catalogue. And they didn’t waste any time… their first move was to re-release EVERY single that they’d ever made.

Technically speaking they weren’t re-releases at all, because they had never been deleted and still had the same catalogue numbers as the originals. They were more like re-issues.

The entire set of 22 singles was augmented by one brand-new one (‘Yesterday’) and released on the same day, so at one point all 23 of them were in the top 100 at the same time – including six in the top fifty!
