The public had to wait a whole six months for another Beatles song after ‘Rubber Soul’, and this must have come as rather a disappointment to them. But it’s hard to dismiss when it’s got ‘Rain’ on the flip.

Needless to say it still sold by the shed load, and managed to knock Frank Sinatra’s ‘Strangers In The Night’ off the top of the charts before succumbing to The Kinks’ legendary ‘Sunny Afternoon’.

On the 6th February 1976 The Beatles contract with EMI expired, freeing up the company to do whatever they liked with their back catalogue. And they didn’t waste any time… their first move was to re-release EVERY single that they’d ever ever made.

Technically speaking they weren’t re-releases at all, because they had never been deleted and still had the same catalogue numbers as the originals. They were more like re-issues.

The entire set of 22 singles was augmented by one brand-new one (‘Yesterday’) and released on the same day, so at one point all 23 of them were in the top 100 at the same time – in the top fifty!
