This was the first time that they released a song on an already available LP. There had been a couple of instances of them releasing a single and an album simultaneously (with ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ and ‘Yellow Submarine’), but this was the first time that punters would be expected to buy a single when they already owned the songs. UK vinyl single (Re-release) Something / Come Together (Double A-side)

  • Label: Apple R 5814 STEREO
  • Released: 8th March 1976

On the 6th February 1976 The Beatles contract with EMI expired, freeing up the company to do whatever they liked with their back catalogue. And they didn’t waste any time… their first move was to re-release EVERY single that they’d ever ever made.

Technically speaking they weren’t re-releases at all, because they had never been deleted and still had the same catalogue numbers as the originals. They were more like re-issues.

The entire set of 22 singles was augmented by one brand-new one (‘Yesterday’) and released on the same day, so at one point all 23 of them were in the top 100 at the same time – in the top fifty!
