Arguably the greatest single ever. Unfortunately it also brought to an end their record-breaking run of twelve consecutive No.1s because it was kept off the top-spot by Engelbert Humperdinck.

On the 6th February 1976 The Beatles contract with EMI expired, freeing up the company to do whatever they liked with their back catalogue. And they didn’t waste any time… their first move was to re-release EVERY single that they’d ever ever made.

Technically speaking they weren’t re-releases at all, because they had never been deleted and still had the same catalogue numbers as the originals. They were more like re-issues.

The entire set of 22 singles was augmented by one brand-new one (‘Yesterday’) and released on the same day, so at one point all 23 of them were in the top 100 at the same time – in the top fifty!

As the 20th anniversary of each of The Beatles’ original singles came around, EMI released the colourful new sleeve from the box-set with a brand-new picture disc.

But seeing as Strawberry Fields was one of only two singles to have a picture sleeve in the first place (the other one being ‘Let It Be’), the only new bit was the picture disc.
