This was The Beatles’ first stereo single in the UK and their final number one.

It is highly likely that if the decision was left solely to Paul then this would never have come out as a single (especially seeing as the “Christ” line got it banned in the States). But after vetoing ‘Revolution’ six months before, he probably felt that if he barred another one of John’s then he would have stretched the band to breaking point.

They very nearly delayed the release for another week because ‘Get Back’ was still riding high at the top, but John didn’t want the topical lyric to date. The promo contained images from his legendary ‘Bed-in’ at the Amsterdam Hilton.

UK vinyl single (Re-release) The Ballad Of John And Yoko b/w Old Brown Shoe

  • Label: Apple R 5786 STEREO
  • Released: 8th March 1976

On the 6th February 1976 The Beatles contract with EMI expired, freeing up the company to do whatever they liked with their back catalogue. And they didn’t waste any time… their first move was to re-release EVERY single that they’d ever ever made.

Technically speaking they weren’t re-releases at all, because they had never been deleted and still had the same catalogue numbers as the originals. They were more like re-issues.

The entire set of 22 singles was augmented by one brand-new one (‘Yesterday’) and released on the same day, so at one point all 23 of them were in the top 100 at the same time – in the top fifty!
