This one knocked The Troggs off the top of the charts, but because they never made a promo for it, when ‘Top Of The Pops’ came to show it on the telly they had to use some old footage of a woman swimming, and a priest walking around a cemetery.

UK vinyl single (Re-release) Yellow Submarine / Eleanor Rigby (Double A-side)

  • Label: Parlophone R 5493 MONO
  • Released: 8th March 1976

On the 6th February 1976 The Beatles contract with EMI expired, freeing up the company to do whatever they liked with their back catalogue. And they didn’t waste any time… their first move was to re-release EVERY single that they’d ever ever made.

Technically speaking they weren’t re-releases at all, because they had never been deleted and still had the same catalogue numbers as the originals. They were more like re-issues.

The entire set of 22 singles was augmented by one brand-new one (‘Yesterday’) and released on the same day, so at one point all 23 of them were in the top 100 at the same time – in the top fifty!

Whilst the rest of the collection used pictures contemporary with the original singles, this one cheated a bit by using a promo shot for the ‘Yellow Submarine’ movie – which came out two years later.
