John Lennon: Lead vocal, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, hand claps; Paul McCartney: Bass guitar, electric piano; George Harrison: Lead guitar; Ringo Starr: Drums, maracas;

This started out as a campaign song for Timothy Leary who was running for governor of California against Ronald Reagan in 1969. He was the same guy who wrote ‘The Psychedelic Experience’ – the book that inspired John to write ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’.

They met when John invited him to take part in the recording of ‘Give Peace A Chance’ in Montreal, after which he asked John if he’d mind writing something specially for his campaign, based upon the slogan “Come Together – Join The Party”. John duly came up with a little ditty, and Leary started playing it at his rallies. Unfortunately, he then managed to get himself arrested for possession and his political career came to an abrupt end.
