This was supposedly based on a Walt Disney song from ‘Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs’ where she sings “Wanna know a secret? Promise not to tell? We are standing by a wishing well.” Apparently John’s mum used to sing it to him when he was a little kid. But George thought it was based on an old Stereo’s song called ‘I Really Love You’.

John ended up giving it to George to sing because “I thought it would be a good vehicle for him, because it only had three notes and he wasn’t the best singer in the world.” But it’s corny tune and poofy background “Do-Da-Doos” nearly cocked up the song – you can hear George stifling a laugh at 0:48.

Brian Epstein was rather more enamoured with the song and give it to one of his other acts to sing – Billy J. Kramer. He took his version …
