This was originally going to be called ‘George’s Blues’ or ‘For You Blues’ before George plumped for ‘For You Blue’.

One of Phil Spector’s early ideas was to have a long instrumental break in the middle and overlay some Beatles chatter from the soundtrack. But the only natter to make the master was the bit where John says “Queen says no to pot-smoking FBI movement.” This line was plucked from a session on the 8th January when John commented on a story in the paper saying how the Advisory Committee on Drug Dependency had recommended reducing the sentence for marijuana trafficking.

A full year after the basic track had been laid down George decided to re-record his vocal. He also added the “Go Johnny go” and “Elmore James got nothin’ on this baby” lines, to make it sound …
