This was the first of the ‘Anthology’ reunion songs. They were originally going to make three of them (one for each of the ‘Anthology’ albums) but after hearing the first two George pulled out and the third one (‘Grow Old With Me’) was quietly consigned to the dustbin.

Paul received the three demos in 1994 after meeting up with Yoko at John’s induction into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, where they supposedly buried the hatchet (into each other). This one was written in 1977, after John won his fight against deportation – hence the title ‘Free As A Bird’.

Paul originally wanted George Martin to produce it but his hearing wasn’t up to it, so they invited George’s old Travelling Wilbury’s bandmate Jeff Lynne to do …
