John wrote this as a lullaby for his five-year-old kid because he wasn’t sleeping very well. (He left Cynthia for Yoko a few weeks later.)

The early takes all started with a spoken passage, and the ‘Anthology’ film shows Ringo singing “Come on, now, it’s time you little toddlers are in bed. I’m having no more messing. You’ve been out to the park all day, and you’ve had a lovely time. Now it’s time for bed. Are we ready? Daddy’ll sing.” Another version goes: “Put all those toys away. Yes, Daddy will sing a song for you.”

George Martin wrote the string score after John asked him to arrange it “like Hollywood”. But he described the result as being “possibly overlush”.
