Paul wrote this for John’s little kid, Julian, and describes it in his autobiography. “I originally thought of doing it whilst driving my car out to visit Cynthia and Julian after John’s divorce. We’d been very good friends for millions of years and I thought it was a bit much for them to suddenly be personae non gratae and out of my life, so I decided to pay them a visit and say, ‘How are you doing? What’s happening?’… I always feel sorry for kids in a divorce. I knew it was not going to be easy for him, and I had the idea by the time I got there. I started it with ‘Hey Jules’, which was Julian, ‘don’t make it bad, take a sad song and make it better’. Hey, try and deal with this terrible thing, you know?”
