At the Beatles very first session in June ’62 they offered up ‘Love Me Do’ as their most commercial song. George Martin, however – with thirty thousand years of experience behind him – didn’t see it as a hit and went searching for a replacement. The song that he eventually chose was a Mitch Murray number called ‘How Do You Do It’, and he told them to spruce it up in time for their September session.

Now, the Beatles, it is fair to say, were not exactly enamoured with this cheesy little tune and did their best to get it dumped. “We figured ‘Now, wait a minute,’” said Paul. “We are now starting a reputation, a major reputation, hopefully, so we must be careful what we do.”

But Martin argued that until they came up with something even half as good as ‘How Do You Do …
