John originally aired this during the ‘Eight Days A Week’ session and he can be heard playing its distinctive riff over-and-over whilst they were practising in-between takes.

When it came to the actual recording he had to over-dub the vocals afterwards because it proved to be too difficult to play and sing at the same time – the first time that this had ever been tried on a Beatles record.

The song is best known for the amplifier feedback on the opening chord. The accompanying press release made-out that it was a complete accident, but Mark Lewishon has since proved that John put considerable effort into getting it right – and was immensely proud of the fact. “I defy anybody to find a record, unless it’s some old blues record from 1922, that uses feedback in that way… …
