John and Paul famously gave this to The Rolling Stones, who recorded their version on the 7th October and released it on 1st November – three weeks before The Beatles’ version came out. It went on to become the Stones’ first Top 20 hit.

Apparently John and Paul bumped into their old mate Andrew Loog Oldham (the Stones’ manager) whilst driving around London. He was on the look-out for a follow-up to their debut single, and seeing as Billy J. Kramer was currently riding high with ‘Bad To Me’ (a song that John had written for him) Oldham wondered if they had anything else going spare. So they offered him a verse of ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’. They then played it to Brian Jones, who was the Stones’ leader at the time, but he was worried that it sounded a little ‘rough’ (i.e. ‘shit’) …
