The Beatles -- ‘Kansas City’

Kansas City/Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! (2.33)

Paul McCartney: Lead vocal, bass guitar; John Lennon: Backing vocal, rhythm guitar; George Harrison: Backing vocal, lead guitar; Ringo Starr: Drums; Piano: George Martin

They picked this up whilst sharing a stage with Little Richard in 1962.

The song has a long and complicated history, starting life as Leiber and Stoller’s ‘K.C. Loving’ in 1952. Three years later Little Richard came along and changed its name to ‘Kansas City’, adding the exciting call-and-response segment to the end. Six months later he hived off the end and released it on the back of his classic ‘Good Golly Miss Molly’ single as ‘Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey’. One year after that he released the ‘Kansas City/Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey’ medley as an A-side. This is the version that The Beatles copied for ‘Beatles For Sale’.
