This marked the start of The Beatles shift away from the psychedelia and back to good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll. This kept them one step ahead of the game – but only just. Big bands like Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience all found success in ’68, and Led Zeppelin was born around Christmas. Even The Rolling Stones (who never knowingly passed up a chance to copy The Beatles) found a heavier sound in ’68, releasing ‘Jumping Jack Flash’ on their ‘Beggar’s Banquet’ LP. Other noisy classics to get an airing were Creedance Clearwater Revival’s ‘Suzie Q’, The Who’s ‘The Who Sell Out’ and Cream’s ‘Sunshine Of Your Love’. But the most famous rock moment of all(-time?) was Elvis Presley’s incredible ‘68 Comeback Special’, which aired on the 3rd December.
