The original writer of the song, Carl Perkins, was invited into the studio to watch them doing this. George was especially pleased to make his acquaintance because he was his biggest-ever fan …when they toured Scotland in 1960 he even renamed himself ‘Carl Harrison’ in his honour.

Perkins was in the middle of a rock ‘n’ roll revival tour at the time and remembered: “I was over in London on tour and they invited me over to the studio. They even sent a car for me. We messed around and I showed them different licks I did on my old tunes. Ringo sat beside me the whole time and kept on calling me ‘Mister Perkins’, so I said, ‘I wish you would quit that. That’s my daddy’s name, boy!’ All of a sudden he blurted out, ‘Do you mind if we cut some of your songs?’ And I said, ‘God, man. …
