This was John’s first session back after his car accident when he lost control of the vehicle and veered off into a ditch. Yoko was still feeling poorly at the time and couldn’t get out of bed, so John had one wheeled one into the studio for her. He even strung a microphone up above her head in case she wanted to say something! Luckily, Paul had the perfect get-well tonic: a cheery song about a homicidal maniac.

He had high hopes of turning this into a single and drove the others mad trying to perfect it. “We spent a hell of a lot of time on it,” remembered George, “and it’s one of those instant, whistle-along tunes which some people like and others really hate. It’s quite like ‘Honey Pie’ I suppose, a fun song, but it’s pretty sick because Maxwell keeps on killing people.” …
