The Beatles -- ‘Michelle’

This was written in the fifties during John’s art college days. They used to attend all the beatnik parties held by posh students with beards and berets and funny little accents. Paul remembered one guy strumming away to a French song, and wrote an instrumental piss-take to amuse his mates. “There was this guy called Austin Mitchell who used to throw some pretty wild parties,” he said. “And you could maybe pull girls there, which was the main aim of every second; you could get drinks, which was another aim, and you could generally put yourself about a bit. So I remember sitting round there, and my recollection is of a black turtleneck sweater and sitting very enigmatically in the corner, playing this rather French tune.
