The Beatles -- ‘My Bonnie’

Hamburg recording My Bonnie (2.06)

John Lennon: Backing vocal; Paul McCartney: Backing vocal, bass guitar; George Harrison: Lead guitar, rhythm guitar; Lead vocal: Tony Sheridan; Lead guitar: Tony Sheridan; Rhythm guitar: Tony Sheridan; Drums: Pete Best

During their second visit to Hamburg The Beatles backed English singer/guitarist Tony Sheridan on a couple of gigs at the Top Ten Club. It was during one of these shows that a friend of Tony’s producer Bert Kaempfert recommended using them as a backing band on his next single. Sheridan was already quite popular in Germany (a bit like David Hasselhoff) but hardly anybody had heard of him in England.

George said: “The record of ‘My Bonnie’ goes like this: when Tony sings, it’s me playing the lead, but the break in the middle is Tony playing. The shouting in the background is Paul.” Seeing as Tony’s also got a guitar in his hand it seems that John was left with nothing to do but clap his hands and sing.
