John Lennon: Double-tracked lead vocal, acoustic guitar; Paul McCartney: Harmony vocal, bass guitar; George Harrison: Sitar; Ringo Starr: Maracas, finger cymbals, tambourine;

John wrote this whilst on holiday with Cynthia. It was supposed to be about one of his numerous affairs but he had to write it in code so Cynthia wouldn’t get suspicious.

His friend Pete Shotton thought that it referred to a female journalist he’d met, but John was more vague, saying “I was trying to write about an affair without letting my wife know I was having one. I was sort of writing from my experiences… girl’s flats, things like that.”

Hopefully the lyric wasn’t too literal, because he ends up burning down the woman’s house. Paul explained that “Peter Asher had just done his room out in wood, and a lot of people were decorating their places in wood. Norwegian wood. It was pine, really, just cheap pine.
