The Beatles -- ‘Oh Darling’

Oh! Darling (3.27)

Paul McCartney: Lead vocal, backing vocal, bass guitar, piano; John Lennon: Backing vocal; George Harrison: Lead guitar, synthesiser; Ringo Starr: Drums;

Paul sang this in the bath for a week before committing it to tape because “I wanted it to sound like I’d been doing it on stage all week.”

Alan Parsons remembers him coming in every day to give it a crack: “He’d come in, sing it, and say, ‘No, that’s not it, I’ll try again tomorrow.’ He only tried it once a day. I suppose he wanted to capture a certain rawness which could only be done once before the voice changed. I remember him saying, ‘Five years ago I could have done this in a flash,’ referring, I suppose, to the days of ‘Long Tall Sally’ and ‘Kansas City’.”
