This was one of the songs that prompted Charles Manson to go on a two-day killing spree which culminated in the murder of Sharon Tate and her mates. The police initially suspected The Beatles of committing the crimes because the blood-stained walls were daubbed with “Pig” and “Piggies”, and lines from the ‘White Album’. He even stabbed them with knives and forks because George mentioned them in the lyric. He thought the Beatles were ordering him to give the “pigs” a “damn good whacking” (which was actually a line suggested by George’s mum. Nice one, mum!).

John managed to spice it up with the line “Clutching forks and knives to eat their bacon” – adding a touch of cannibalism to the proceedings. This replaced the inferior line “Clutching forks and knives to cut their pork …
