This song marks the first time that a backwards tape was used on record. John discovered the effect when he was high on pot one night. He was fiddling around with his recording equipment and got the tape for ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ all twisted up.

“I got home from the studio and I was stoned out of my mind on marijuana,” he said. “And, as I usually do, I listened to what I’d recorded that day. Somehow I got it on backwards and I sat there transfixed with the ear-phones on, with a big hash joint. I ran in the next day and said: ‘I know what to do with it… listen to this!’ And I made them all listen to it backwards.”

Some conspiracy theorists insist that the backwards part contains a hidden message, but it’s really just the first line of the song spooled backwards: “Rain… …
