Phil Spector famously smothered this in syrupy strings without seeking Paul’s permission first. Ringo was the only one who participated at the session and it descended into an utter farce. Spector managed to annoy absolutely everyone in the room – even the mild-mannered Ringo. At one point the orchestra downed their instruments en masse and balance engineer Pete Brown stormed off home. “He had to take a different pill every half hour and have his bodyguard with him constantly,” said Pete. “He was on the point of throwing a wobbly, saying ‘I want to hear this, I want to hear that. I must have this, I must have that.’” In the end Ringo had to go over and tell him to cool it.
